I’ve been traveling to Door County for many years now and I can honestly say it’s one of my favorite places on Earth! I’ve visited and tried most of the orchards in Door County and I can honestly say Seaquist Orchards Farm Market is one of my top favorites! If you’re searching for an orchard to go cherry or apple picking in Door County, I highly recommend you goto Seaquist!

This family owned business’ story starts back in the 1860’s and has become a staple in the Door County region for cherries and other produce. Their farm is now over 1,300 acres and stretches from Sturgeon Bay to Sister Bay. Seaquist Orchards has its own market, processing plant, canning company, cidery and bakery! You can find all kinds of cherry and apple goods at their market as well as cherry items, souvenirs and other fun gifts! They also have a large playground area outside, making it super family-friendly.

I had a chance to speak with Lisa, the canning and wholesale manager at Seaquist Orchards Farm Market to learn a bit more about their orchard, cherry and apple picking and family activities available at the Orchard. Check out our conversation below!

Q&A with Lisa at Seaquist Orchards Farm Market

What varieties of cherries and or apples do you grow?

Cherries- We primarily grow Montmorency Tart. We have around 1300 acres of these. We also have about 50 acres of multiple varieties of sweet cherries and around 50 acres of multiple varieties of apples.

What’s the cherry picking experience like for visitors at Seaquist Orchards?

It’s iconic, a true door county experience. It’s an incredibly fun experience for families and young children as hunting (which includes plenty of sampling) for the best cherries is incredibly fun. Not to mention being out in gorgeous Door County nature and connecting with agriculture through a farm to fork experience make it truly unique.

What’s the apple picking experience like for visitors?

We actually are fairly new to the pick your own world and have never done apples before (only cherries). We have Honeycrisp and Cortland apples available for pick your own. There are other apple varieties available in the market store.

Are there specific times of year when families should plan their visit for peak cherry or apple picking?

Cherries- Typically the month of July is best, early July for sweets, later July for tarts. Apples- we have apples in the store all of September and October, but we will only be doing pick your own apples the first three weekends of October when we have the best and most abundant variety- honeycrisp.  Our phone system has an automated message that we update daily during cherry harvest so that people can call in to check the pick your own status.

Do you host events at your orchard? Or what family-friendly activities are at the orchard?

Cherry Festival, always the last Saturday in July and Apple Festival, always the last Saturday in September. Both are geared towards families. Check out the “events” tab on the website.

What makes your orchard different from others in Door County?

We are truly “the cherry people”, we grow 95% of Door County’s cherries and process 100% of them. We also are one of the few markets that make our pies 100% from scratch and are well known for it. We also having a canning company and make all of our specialty canned items ourselves.
