Q&A with Sarah of Be Beauty Boutique
Can you please provide a short description of your business?
Be Beauty Boutique is owned by 2 college friends (Sarah & Kate) who now have been friends for over 25 years. Our goal is to provide fashionable & comfortable everyday clothing in both Ladies’ & Plus sizes. We also specialize in modern & affordable jewelry, trendy gifts & one-of-a-kind home, garden & holiday decor.
Can you share a bit about what inspired Be Beauty Boutique? Why did you decide to open a boutique in Door County?
Kate & I decided to open the boutique together when we were both 35. I don’t want to speak for Kate, but I think we were both at point in our lives where you really reflect on what you truly want to do until you retire. I was unhappy with my corporate career in Milwaukee and didn’t believe a different type of corporate job was the answer. Before having kids, Kate previously owned a small-scale baby boutique in Fish Creek. After her kids got older, she wanted to get back to business as a boutique owner but with a partner. At first Kate jokingly asked me to open a shop with her in Door County knowing how unhappy I was with my career. But as we talked more, it just seemed to make sense! So overall the true inspiration behind Be Beauty is two good friends coming together to do something great with their lives & their future. And why Door County… Kate’s lived in Egg Harbor her entire adult life so it just seemed to be a natural fit.
How would you describe the style of the clothing you carry at Be Beauty Boutique?
Our clothing is fashionable but not overly trendy. We like to focus on nice, soft fabrics and styles you would wear every day but with a cute detail that slightly stands out to look unique. We also work hard to find affordable clothing. I think the most expensive clothing item we’ve ever carried was a pair of jeans for $65. Also, it’s extremely important to us to carry Plus sizes up to 3X. It’s such a missed market especially in Door County. Our most popular sizes are L, XL and 1X. It’s size S that ends up on the clearance rack.
What kind of experience do you aim to create for your customers when they visit your boutique?
We always love to have fun! And we have fun, upbeat music that just makes you wanna sing or dance while shopping. So many customers tell us we have the best music ever (and have even asked for our playlist) because it ranges from the 60s to today.
What is your favorite item you offer your customers?
Hands down, no doubt about it, it’s our oh-so-popular super-soft leggings. Seriously the best leggings ever, you never want to take them off. They are super soft, have the side pockets, high waist & stay up, not see-through (you can bend over all you want in these), wash well and the best part, they’re only $24.95. And yep, we carry these up to size 3X as well.
What is one outfit staple all women should have in their wardrobe and why?
I’m completely serious when I say a tiara! As Amy Farrah Fowler said, “It’s a TIARA! Put it on me, put it on me, put it on me!” There’s just something fun & special about a tiara that makes you feel good. And it’s universal and relatable for all ages from 3 to 93 years old. It’s also why we sell tiaras (and yes, tiaras have been a hot seller ever since we opened 7 years ago) and it’s also why have a fabulous throne. We like to brand ourselves as “Home of the Selfie Throne” so customers can put on a shiny tiara & take a memorable photo while on vacation.
How can customers support your small business?
The best way to support us is by word of mouth. There are soooooo many fun & fabulous things to do in Door County, it’s so hard to choose where to go or what to see. We always have new customers stop in because their friend or family or coworker said, “when you’re in Egg Harbor, make sure to check out Be Beauty Boutique“. It’s the actual experience & seeing & knowing our products & affordability that makes others want to recommend us. It might sound corny, but it’s really the in-person connection that has grown our business vs social media or other type of similar outlet.
