So where should you do your Menasha High School senior portrait session? One question I often get asked as a senior photographer is if an urban or nature location is better for senior photos. And honestly, there’s a lot to love about each location! So let’s break it down and talk about the differences and which location would be best for you!
Okay, so first let’s address this question of which is better. Honestly, neither are superior. They both can be gorgeous and wonderful for your Menasha High School senior pictures! It really comes down to you, what you’re wanting for your senior photo session and the outfits you want to wear. Think about which location feels most like you. Consider the vibes and style of senior pictures you’re hoping for too. And definitely consider the outfits you’d like to wear during your session as there are some styles that just fit better in specific locations than others.

Cityscapes are a great option for senior portraits. There’s a lot to work with when it comes to different buildings, textures, colors, etc. We could walk downtown and explore the streets, head to a parking garage or even choose a picturesque alley! Choosing an urban location for your senior photos might be a good idea if you love the buzz of city life, enjoy architecture and want to include bold fashion forward trends.
I want to share with you a few things that you can realistically expect from a session in a city. First, there will be people all around us. If you’re concerned with having an audience, I would go for a small town location so there aren’t as many people. There will also be cars and people in your backgrounds. While typically I will edit out some of the most distracting objects in the background, it may be near impossible to remove everything in the city. We’ll also have to be cautious of traffic and mindful of where we go just so we’re safe during our session.

Choosing nature for your senior photos is also a great option. Each season has different colors, vibes, flowers and scenery to choose from! We can wander through a hidden wildflower field, stroll along the beach or explore a wooded area. Nature backdrops might be a good idea for you if you love the outdoors, enjoy flowers, want golden hour and the sunset and plan to wear flowy, whimsical outfits.
If you’re thinking about choosing a nature location for your senior photos here are a few things to note. First, bugs and animals are part of the experience haha. I usually remind my clients to bring bug spray to their session to help with mosquitoes. Also while I can’t guarantee flowers, there are usually some blooming almost always between May and October. However, if we have a drought, flowers may not be as plentiful. Nature can be super unpredictable, but I try my best to stay on top of things to make the experience easy.

If you’re still torn between choosing nature or city for your senior session, I recommend choosing both! It’s not uncommon to do some of your portraits downtown and then head to a field nearby to get some nature images too. It’s a great mixture and gives your senior photos a lot of variety between backgrounds, outfits and poses. This may be a good idea for those that love the busy city streets, but also are drawn to the beauty of wildflower fields.
There’s no wrong answer when it comes to choosing nature or urban for your Menasha High School senior photos. Overall I would consider where you feel most comfortable, the type of photos you’re most drawn to and the style of clothing you want to wear. And if you still can’t decide then choose both haha! There’s nothing wrong with choosing the best of both worlds!
And for those of you wanting super unique locations, I’m your senior photographer! I love finding unique spots for my senior clients including wildflower fields, beaches and small towns! I think senior photos should stand out and be different so I’ve spent years searching for one of a kind locations that are gorgeous!
