There’s so much to love about senior photos in the wildflowers! And at the same time, there’s so much to consider when it comes to planning the perfect session. I’ve been a Little Chute High School senior photographer for over 10 years and have become an expert with wildflowers and senior photos! I’m known for my one of a kind wildflower locations that most people don’t even know exist. Below I’ve created a wildflower guide to help you plan the perfect senior photo session featuring gorgeous wildflowers that can be found near Little Chute High School.

Choose Your Season for Wildflowers

First things first, I encourage you to consider the different seasons and the wildflowers that are available throughout the year! Some seasons offer unique flowers, one of a kind locations and unexpected surprises haha. So don’t rule anything out.  While I can’t guarantee flowers because nature is unpredictable, I can say that typically there are flowers blooming in Wisconsin between May-October. Below I’ve listed out each season and described the flowers that usually are available during those times.

Spring Wildflowers

Spring is a wonderful option for wildflowers in your senior photos! The colors are always vibrant and bold. There are also some really unique flowers that bloom this time of year. You can often find flowering trees and shrubs, which is really unique! There’s also a really unique flower that blooms every other year in the spring and early summer. It has gorgeous purple and blue tones and is absolutely magical. If you can plan your Little Chute High School senior photos around that flower, I highly recommend it! Typically the flowers in Spring have a little bit more of a whimsical and dainty vibe. The most common flowers I would say are white, yellow, pink, and purple. Spring typically tends to be sessions booked May until early June.

Summer Wildflowers

Summer is often the season everyone thinks about when it comes to wildflowers and for good reason! Summertime is the prime wildflower season and the colors are at their peak. When you book your senior photography session in the summer you can expect fields that have various different flower types and sometimes are even loaded with flowers. I love the variety of wildflowers that can be found in the summer including different types that have various heights and colors found in fields. You can usually find flowers that are yellow, purple, white, pink and some orange even. For the Little Chute High School seniors who want summer senior portraits I would book your session mid June through mid September.

Fall Wildflowers

Fall is another great time for flowers! We usually start seeing Fall colors emerge around mid to late September. This is when grasses change to those beautiful golden and brown tones and some other unique wildflowers tend to show up. While Fall usually gives you a less chance of finding wildflowers, there are some really common ones that we can easily find typically through the first week of October at least. There are some beautiful vibrant purple and pink flowers and usually some white flowers that stick around until mid to late Fall. If you’re hoping for fall vibes and flowers I would book your senior session between mid September and early October.

Things To Consider When Choosing a Date

When it comes to choosing the right senior photo session date, there are a few things you should consider. First think if there’s a particular season that you’re wanting for your senior photos. If you’re not sure and are open to options, then I would look at your schedule. Look at the months that you have the most flexibility with scheduling and choose one that doesn’t have a lot going on. You’re going to want to have some extra time to devote to planning and preparing for your session.  Next, I would also reach out to the senior photographers you are considering for your session and look at what they have available for dates and locations. And lastly, look at Little Chute High School’s yearbook photo deadline and be sure that you can submit it in time. Honestly, there’s no such thing as a bad session date haha, it just comes down to what you prefer and what works best with your schedule.

Outfit Ideas for Senior Portraits in a Wildflower Field

Let’s talk about the perfect outfits for senior portraits in a wildflower field! There are two outfits staples I would recommend wearing to a session in a wildflower field. First I would recommend a flowy dress because it gives those magical and whimsical vibes! The dress is also fun to play, twirl and dance in during your session haha. The second outfit I like to recommend is jeans and a cute top. Mainly because there are tons of poses that we can do in jeans that we can’t do in dresses. We can also get a ton of variety between these two outfits, which will help your photos to standout. For colors you can’t go wrong with neutrals, but also consider something colorful! Be sure to coordinate with your senior photographer about colors to make sure you choose the right one for the field you’ll be using.

Safety Tips for Wildflowers

Before you hop in a wildflower field, there are a few safety tips I just want to mention quickly. First there are some flowers that are dangerous to touch so stay away from wild parsnip, hemlock, stinging nettle, poison ivy and oak, and poison sumac. You should also wear bug repellent as oftentimes you can find ticks in the tall grassy and wildflower field areas. So make sure you spray down before entering the field. And then when you get home after your session, just be sure to check yourself over and remove any ticks you do find. It’s always a good idea to check just in case.

Plan for the Unexpected

Like I said earlier, nature can be unpredictable haha. Some years things are really plush and there’s an abundance of flowers. And other years there’s a drought and there aren’t as many flowers. There’s never a 100% guarantee for wildflowers. If flowers are super important to you I  recommend bringing a flower bouquet even as backup. Just to make sure that flowers are incorporated into your session! But even if there are flowers, I still think a bouquet is a good idea because in my opinion there’s no such thing as too many flowers haha. Something I do a little bit differently for my clients is that I check all of my spots weekly for my Little Chute High School seniors. Just so I can be sure to offer the best location possible for their session.
